Melges 24 teams took to the water in Portoroz for the second day of racing today, in what proved to be a light airs test of tactics and patience.
The race start was delayed which meant the scheduled 10:00 local time start had to be postponed due to lack wind. However, a light westerly breeze of 6-7kts had built to allow a start to take place at 14:00 local time.
The tough conditions barely fazed EFG Bank, who managed to find an extra gear, keeping the gas on and their concentration up. They opened the season with a victory and amassed 22 points across four races.
The second highest scorers of the day were Stribog from Russia. The team made its debut in the Melges class with a series of impressive performances and sits three points behind the table toppers.
FGF Sailing Team also looked like a fine-tuned squad, finishing the day on third with only one point margin from the nearest challenger Altea, who is breathing down their necks.
In the Corinthian division the scoreboard gives insight into very tight competition between Swiss Cinghi-Aile and local team Atena. Each shares equal points and are currently in eleventh and twelfth respectively.
As the opening Act of the 2016 Series nears its close, many teams are showing they are capable of picking up good results, so the question is – can any of the challengers steal the top spot from the world champion EFG bank and will Atena celebrate on home turf? Follow tomorrow’s final races to find out!
